How AI picks sources
Models want extractable, checkable facts. Homepage slogans do not help. Question pages and comparisons do.
Generative engines do not name brands at random. They compress the world: retrieve or recall a candidate set, then keep the passages that are specific, consistent, and easy to check. Your job is to become that passage.
What the model is actually looking for
Retrieval depth varies by product. The selection logic does not:
- A clear entity. Brand name, product name, and official domain line up. You are not confused with a namesake.
- A checkable claim. “Proxy buying for small teams” is easier to write into an answer than “industry-leading.”
- Extractable structure. The heading matches the question. The first sentence answers it. Lists and tables beat long prose.
- An echo outside your site. Docs, reviews, directories, and trade press repeating the same fact make the model more willing to cite you.
If you are missing, it is often not “not enough authority.” It is that the answer has no slot for you: your sentences are vague, or they conflict with someone else’s facts.
Four edits that usually pay off
- Title the page as a question. “What CitePath is, and which engines it watches” aligns with how people ask. “About us” does not.
- Lead with a citable sentence. Object, scenario, difference — then expand.
- Put comparable facts on the page. Engines covered, refresh cadence, price unit, team size. Models compare with these.
- Keep the name stable. One Chinese name, one English name, one primary domain. Do not mix “GEO Agent / CitePath / legacy brand.”
Do not rely on the homepage
Homepages convert. They rarely answer “how do I choose,” “versus whom,” or “is this for me.” Models more often cite:
- Product definition and pricing pages
- Comparison or use-case pages
- Standalone how-to guides
- Third-party reviews and documentation sites
CitePath’s loop is: probe engines with the customer’s own wording, see which page types competitors win on, then fill the gap — instead of writing another “industry trends” post. A source is not performed authority. It is a fact the model can extract the same way twice.
